There is a quote attributed to Strabo of Amasia, the famous ancient Greek geographer, historian, and philosopher who lived between 64 BC and 24 AD: “If God wants his creation to live a long life, he leaves them on the Datça Peninsula.” This week, I was a guest at the Palaia Boutique Hotel in Datça, a gift to the tourism sector from my childhood friend, İsmet Tekinalp, the owner of the world-famous Tadım Dried Nuts, a source of pride for Turkey. Datça, known in antiquity as Knidos, is truly a paradise on earth with its magnificent nature, lush green forests, almond trees, and turquoise sea. Its crystal-clear sea and elegant architecture, built with great respect for this magnificent nature and hidden among the trees, immediately captivate one. In Datça, where the first settlements date back 4,000 years, the ancient city of Knidos, founded by the Dorians from northern Greece in the 7th century BC, approximately 2,700 years ago, was a city-state renowned for its cultural and strategic importance, and was particularly known as a significant center for science, art, and commerce. This magnificent city, with two harbors—one used for trade and the other for military purposes—was an important center for both maritime trade and science and art.
